Esther Mallowah and Ian Pay have recently joined the Institute as Head of Tech Policy and Head of Data Analytics and Tech, respectively.
Esther’s role will include supporting the strategic direction of ICAEW’s tech activities. She will work closely with Ian and the wider team to train and support members encountering technology challenges and preparing them for future changes.
Drawing on her previous experience working in technology external audit, internal audit and consulting roles, focussing on Information and Cyber Security, Esther will also work with policy makers to ensure that technology’s potential is harnessed fairly, ethically, and in a way that benefits all members of society.
Meanwhile, Ian - previously a data specialist at PwC focusing on audit analytics and data extract/transform/load (ETL) processes - will lead on mastering technology and data, a key theme within ICAEW’s 10-year strategy. This will involve a strong focus on skills and training, as well as keeping ICAEW members up to date with the latest developments in the world of tech and data.
He will also be responsible for ICAEW’s two technology-focused communities: Excel and Analytics. The latter is now ICAEW’s largest community having recently passed 25,000 members. Ian hopes to further grow and improve engagement with both communities by ensuring that ICAEW continues to talk about the issues that really matter to members.
Esther said: “This week saw the launch of the UK’s Digital Strategy bringing cross-government tech and digital policies together in one roadmap. I am excited to have joined ICAEW at a time when governments around the world are seeking to grow and invest in our digital economy. My focus at ICAEW will be ensuring that our members and students are prepared for current and future technological changes, and that the Institute provides an insightful and ethical voice to technology policy matters for the benefit of chartered accountants, businesses, and society.”
Ian added: “I'm thrilled to have joined ICAEW and for the opportunity to have a significant influence on the profession and the journey that many of our members are on in terms of the use of data and technology in both practice and business. It’s my ambition to equip both the current and next generation of ICAEW Chartered Accountants with all the tools and knowledge they require to prosper in a modern, tech-enabled society.”

Esther Mallowah
Esther has previously worked in the Technology Internal Audit at Willis Towers Watson, where she focused on information and cyber security and operational resilience. She also worked in the Technology External Audit team at Deloitte where she qualified as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. Prior to joining ICAEW in April 2022, Esther took a career break.
Ian Pay
Prior to joining ICAEW in March 2022, Ian worked for over 10 years at PwC in Data Analytics, specialising in External Audit and Data Acquisition and developing robust and automated ETL processes to support the firm’s award-winning Halo suite of applications. Ian also played an active role in the development and delivery of training courses, with digital upskilling being an area he is particularly passionate about. He has previously trained as a secondary school teacher and a musician.
