Firstly, the District Society has changed its executive structure, splitting the roles of its leadership between myself as President, and our Chair, Michael Colin, whilst continuing to work closely with ICAEW’s Regional Director for the North West, Justin Kyriakou and his team.
During my Presidential term, which runs until May 2023, my focus will be on developing greater links with the business and academic communities in Manchester, whilst Michael will focus on building visibility of the wide range of member services available to local ICAEW members.
This will allow the District Society to have a stronger voice across the local area and, as chartered accountants, allow it to play a key role in assisting and leading businesses facing the challenges and opportunities brought by the post-COVID world.
Our "voice in the community” will be supported by plans to host several flagship events for local members working in practice and industry throughout the year, along with activities focussed on building closer links to Greater Manchester’s universities. We’ll continue to build on our ongoing initiative with the Alliance Manchester Business School, and working together with six local accounting practices, launch a review into media influence on retention of staff, an issue that is affecting all aspects of business. We are also planning a co-hosted lecture, led by keynote speakers, to discuss the proposed legislation for audit & regulatory reform, and its implications for our profession. We’ll also look at the role that chartered accountants play in innovation and business development, including the technological skills that form part of the ever-evolving training schedule for ICAEW members.
We’ve a varied and diverse programme for our local members; from virtual technical CPD courses, sector-focussed member groups for those working in or advising clients in legal, charity, tourism & hospitality, and events aimed at young future leaders, sole practitioners and those new to the profession - there really is something for all, and at every stage of their chartered accountancy career. You’ll find all the details for forthcoming events here – and if you’ve ideas on how we can enhance this programme even further, we’d be keen to hear from you – so please do get in touch.
We are also looking for members to join us and take a seat on the local committee; it’s vital that the make-up of our committee reflects the diversity of our local membership, and that everyone’s views are represented and heard. As a District Society volunteer, you’ll play an important role in helping to shape this ongoing local programme of initiatives and activities aimed at supporting your fellow local members – it’s a great opportunity to get involved!
We look forward to working with you in the coming months.
