Examining the rising cost of cyberattacks

Author: ICAEW

Published: 29 Oct 2020

Cyberattacks on large businesses are becoming more sophisticated and widespread. We look at how different countries and industry sectors have been affected in recent years.

The cost of cybercrime for seven countries

The Accenture Security The Cost of Cybercrime reports published last year and in 2017 highlight how the cost of cyber attacks has increased for larger organisations in seven countries over a three year period.

The authors of the report define cyberattacks as malicious activity conducted against an organisation through the IT infrastructure via the internal or external networks, or the internet.

The average annual cost of cybercrime by industry

The Accenture Security report from 2019 also examined how the cost changed for large organisations in different sectors between 2017 and 2018.

Additional information

The Cost of Cybercrime surveys are independently conducted by Ponemon Institute LLC and jointly developed by Accenture.
