Highlights from the broader tax news for the week ending 2 October 2024, including: new guidance on the economic crime levy; and HMRC asks agents for help with preparing businesses for the new digital service for alcohol duty.

Economic crime levy

HMRC has published guidance on the circumstances in which, and how a business may cancel its registration for the economic crime levy.

New digital service for alcohol duty

HMRC has informed agents that it is writing to approved compounders and rectifiers, and to cider makers who produce low amounts of alcohol, to tell them about the new digital service which is due to launch in March 2025.

HMRC has explained how agents can help their clients to prepare, and has asked agents to remind businesses that they need to accurately account for alcohol duty using the current processes.

Pubs or clubs with gaming machines

HMRC has asked agents to ensure that clients that run pubs or clubs with gaming machines register for the correct duty where required. HMRC has provided summaries of machine games duty (MGD) and gaming duty, and has set out the action to be taken where a business has stopped being liable for MGD and needs to deregister.

HMRC has published an update for managers of individual savings account (ISAs) managers and providers of child trust funds (CTFs).

Changes to business rates in Wales

The Welsh Government is consulting on changes which would withdraw charitable non-domestic rates relief from private schools from 1 April 2025. Responses are requested by 16 December 2024.
