MTD IT will be phased in from April 2026, starting with sole traders and landlords that have total sales and rents of more than £50,000.
HMRC MTD IT events
Following events in Glasgow and London in 2024, HMRC will be hosting more making tax digital for income tax (MTD IT) events for agents and software developers in 2025.
HMRC says that the events will help agents to:
- find out more about MTD IT, with the opportunity to ask questions;
- understand which clients will be in MTD, what their obligations will be, and the role played by software;
- access support to sign-up for testing; and
- discuss management of clients using the agent services account.
Registration is now open for the following events:
- 24 February 2025: Leeds;
- 4 March 2025: Belfast; and
- 27 March 2025: Edinburgh.
All events are scheduled to take place from 11am to 3pm. Each event has limited spaces. To book your space, email mailboxmakingtaxdigital@hmrc.gov.uk.
ICAEW resources
MTD IT is one of the subjects covered in the latest episode of ICAEW’s podcast The Tax Track. In the podcast, Caroline Miskin, Senior Technical Manager – Digital Taxation, explains what agents can do to prepare for the April 2026 start date. This includes considering whether to sign up clients voluntarily for MTD IT before 5 April 2025 in order to get the full experience for a tax year.
For further guidance on MTD IT, see ICAEW’s MTD hub. This includes a link to the latest in ICAEW’s Economy Explainer series, providing a summary of MTD IT.
