ICAEW appoints new Chair of the Board

Peter Wyman CBE becomes ICAEW’s first externally appointed Chair of the Board. He will start the role in October and will serve for an initial three-year term.

The need for an independent Chair of Board in ICAEW was one of the first recommendations of a comprehensive review launched in 2020 with the aim of modernising the Institute’s governance. Until now the ICAEW Board has been chaired by the elected ICAEW President, who is a member of ICAEW Council and changes each year.

Wyman has a wealth of senior experience in the public and private sectors and was selected following an open and rigorous recruitment process. In his role as Chair, he will oversee the implementation of further governance reforms approved by ICAEW Council, including changes to the composition of the Board.

Mark Rhys, ICAEW President, said: “We are delighted to have Peter as ICAEW’s first independent Chair of the Board, and we greatly value the experience he will bring to this vital position. I look forward to working with Peter as we transition to his leadership of the Board.”

Julia Penny, Immediate Past President and Chair of the recruiting panel added: “Peter is a highly skilled and experienced Chair, having worked for many years with complex organisations in heavily regulated environments. I am confident that he will lead the Board through this period of change, the goal of which is an ICAEW that is stronger and more agile, and better able to serve the public interest and support its members.”

Since leaving PwC in 2010, where he had been a partner and a member of the Global Executive, Wyman has held a portfolio of non-executive appointments spanning the private, public and third sectors, including currently being the Chair of NHS Blood and Transplant and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Pay.UK. He was a member of the ICAEW Council from 1991 to 2009 and President in 2002-03. He was awarded a CBE in the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the accountancy profession.

Wyman said: “I have been a passionate advocate for my profession and my professional body, ICAEW, all my working life. After a gap of some 14 years, it is great to be involved again and to be able to contribute to this important new development in the governance of the Institute.”
