In a recent ICAEW article, James Bore, cyber-security expert and Managing Director of Bores Ltd, says: “We’ve not made a significant difference to the current criminal threats, so there’s no reason for criminals to change their tactics…Criminals will just continue developing and deploying these threats because they keep on making money.”
Bore continues: “Companies tend to buy products rather than actually looking at their processes, procedures and training. Organisations are very heavy on security technology, but the technology doesn’t help protect them against certain threats because criminals just adapt to the technology.”
Addressing the weakest link
So, what can be done? Multiple surveys show that people are the weakest link in cyber defences, with 74% of cyber breaches caused by human risks. Therefore, it’s crucial that employees are fully informed about what cyber attacks can look like and what to do if they encounter one.
This article contains practical advice on how to help staff keep up with cybercrime and the following CPD-verifiable content explores current and future cyber security risks and trends to update your own knowledge in the area.
