Data for our benchmarking reports is supplied by FAME, a company and financial database. It provides detailed company information, including addresses and contacts, on UK and Irish public and private companies.
FAME is updated daily and can be used to create mailing lists for a marketing strategy, to generate comparative lists of companies that you can use to benchmark an organisation or to obtain company reports.
We provide reports free of charge to ICAEW members and ACA students. This service is not available to members of the public.
What information is in a report?
We can produce reports that provide financial data for companies within an industry or business sector and UK region.
Depending on the data available, the following information may be given in our reports:
- company name
- town or city (taken from the trading address)
- trade description (including Standard Industrial Classification code)
- total turnover
- UK turnover
- overseas turnover
- date accounts last made up (and accounting reference date)
- cost of sales
- gross profit
- operating profit
- profit (loss) before tax
- directors' remuneration
- number of employees (last year)
- audit fee.
The results will be sent to you in Excel format.
Can I use this service to compare small companies?
The rise in the audit thresholds for small and medium-sized enterprises and the subsequent increase in the number of companies filing abbreviated accounts means that little or no data is available for many smaller companies. Our reports exclude most small companies. This service is primarily aimed at benchmarking companies filing full accounts.
How can I compare my company (or my client's company) with other organisations?
If you know the SIC code (between 2 and 4 digits) for your company or your client's company we can produce a list of companies with the same code in the region of your choice. Alternatively, if you do not know the code, we can produce a benchmarking report using your description of the company's main business activity.
How do I choose SIC codes?
SIC codes are used to group and classify business types and industry sectors and you can use them to produce more accurately targeted lists of relevant companies. The full UK Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities 2007 (UK SIC 2007) is available from the Office for National Statistics. Please note that the FAME database currently uses UK SIC (2007) codes.
