BICA members - join ICAEW

The Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) and ICAEW are working together to support BICA members and students in becoming members of ICAEW. This means that BICA members and students will hold both BICA and ICAEW membership.

Holding both memberships will lead to wider international recognition and give support from two professional bodies which are valued around the world in business, practice and the public sector.

BICA students

Whilst you are training towards BICA membership you will also be recognised as an ICAEW student.

You will have access to the same resources that are available to ACA students via our website. Your access includes an online training file, which you will maintain during the duration of your training as a BICA student. You will access the online training file and website using your existing ICAEW student number, used for exam purposes in the past. Access to the full range of resources and

AAT and other professional qualifications

If you are studying for AAT Botswana or another professional qualification you can be eligible to become a BICA and ICAEW student. Individuals will have to meet set minimum educational entry requirements set by BICA.

AAT (Association of Accounting Technician)

If you are studying towards the AAT Botswana, you can apply for BICA student membership once you have successfully completed AAT Botswana. At this point, you can continue your studies towards BICA membership and access all the student resources provided to ICAEW students via ICAEW website.

When you have completed your training and you have been accepted into BICA as a member, you will be eligible to apply for ICAEW membership.

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)

If you are an ACCA student, you are required to join BICA first and study for the BICA qualification in the normal way. At this point, you can continue your studies towards BICA membership and access all the student resources provided to ICAEW students via ICAEW website. You may be eligible to claim exemptions where applicable.

When you have completed your examinations and have been invited to join BICA as a member, ICAEW will also send an invitation to you to join ICAEW membership automatically. 

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants)

If you are a CIMA student you are required to join BICA and study for the BICA qualification in the normal way. At this point, you can continue your studies towards BICA membership and access all the student resources provided to ICAEW students via ICAEW website. You may be eligible to claim exemptions where applicable.

When you have completed your examinations and have been invited to join BICA as a member, ICAEW will send an invitation to you to join ICAEW membership.

Join us as a BICA member

If you are a BICA member you can become an ICAEW member, providing you have taken and passed all the BICA examinations or have taken the required ICAEW top up examinations or are able to apply for ICAEW membership under a different reciprocal route.

Other routes to membership

Reciprocal membership agreements

Current members of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ) can become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant through ICAEW reciprocal membership agreement. You will not be required to take any additional exams.

Current members of the following accountancy bodies can also become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant through our reciprocal membership agreements:

  • Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI);
  • Chartered Professional Accountants Canada (CPA Canada);
  • Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants(HKICPA)[1];
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS); and
  • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)

Members of ICAB, ICAI and ICAP

Members who have qualified with the professional accountancy body in their home country can also become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant by completing the requirements of ICAEW Chartered Accountant qualification, the ACA. The bodies include:

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB);
  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI); and
  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP).

Pathways

Alternatively, if you are a qualified member of ACCA, Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants(HKICPA)[2], Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), live and work outside the UK and have relevant experience, you may be eligible to apply for ICAEW membership through the Pathways to Membership scheme.

For members of those bodies who are not eligible to apply through the Pathways scheme, there are top-up arrangements in place.
