An example of how ICAEW's CPD requirements could apply to an audit manager in a Tier 3 practice which has a client base that is predominantly made up of medium-sized companies.

Meet Jamie

Jamie Dawkins is an audit manager working in a Tier 3 firm of auditors. The firm has only one Public Interest Entity (PIE) audit client, on which Jamie is assistant manager. He estimates no more than 15% of his time is spent on the PIE audit annually. The majority of Jamie’s professional time is spent on accounting and assurance work in relation to medium-sized companies, which represents the firm’s core client base.

Jamie's CPD requirements

After using the CPD self-assessment tool, Jamie confirms that he is in CPD practice category 3. This means he is required to undertake at least 20 hours of CPD annually, of which 10 must be verifiable.

Jamie must also keep records and make them available to ICAEW on request. This is in addition to the requirement on his employer to keep records.

Jamie's CPD activities

Jamie’s firm organises a programme of technical and skills training comprising quarterly financial reporting and auditing updates, annual ethics and anti-money laundering training, and a programme of skills training for managers (managing teams, handling conflict, professional judgement, communication).

The firm’s programme of training comprises 30 hours of verifiable CPD annually, which Jamie completes. The firm maintains a record of Jamie’s CPD learning at the firm.

Jamie supplements his learning with ICAEW online learning resources. As a member of the ICAEW Audit and Assurance Faculty, he accesses resources relevant to his role (guidance on emerging technical issues, practical support including via webinars).

Jamie also keeps up to date by reading technical and relevant industry briefings (six hours, non-verifiable). He estimates the time spent is approximately two hours of CPD per month (24 hours, non-verified). He maintains a record of non-verifiable CPD activities.

CPD required   Undertaken CPD
