If you spend a significant portion of your time providing audit services to Public Interest Entities (PIEs) and large companies, this has an impact on which CPD category you fall into under ICAEW's CPD Regulations. This case study examines what that means.

Meet Ruwad

Ruwad Husseyin qualified in the previous CPD year (2022/23) and at the start of the 2023/24 CPD year he was promoted to audit senior within his firm. He works on audits across a range of sectors. The firm’s audit clients range from small to large, including two PIEs. Ruwad spends a significant proportion of his time on larger audits.

Ruwad's CPD requirements

Ruwad uses the CPD self-assessment tool to understand his new CPD obligations. As he is a statutory auditor on large companies, including PIEs, he must assess the proportion of time that he spends on these audit clients annually.

Ruwad is a full-time employee and, based on the firm’s time and resource plan for the year, it is estimated that he will spend on average one day a week on PIE audits (20%) and a similar amount of time on large company audits (20%).

In total he expects to spend around 40% of his professional time on audit engagements for large companies and PIEs.

The ICAEW's CPD self-assessment tool confirms that Ruwad falls into CPD practice category 2, which requires him to complete at least 30 hours of CPD annually, of which 20 must be verifiable.

Ruwad is also required to keep records and make them available to ICAEW on request, as is his employer, which is an ICAEW member firm.

Ruwad's CPD activities

Ruwad’s firm provides a mandatory programme of technical and skills training comprising financial reporting and auditing updates, annual ethics and anti-money laundering training, and a structured programme of skills training for qualified seniors (managing teams, handling conflict, professional judgement, communication).

The training programme provides Ruwad with 40 hours of verifiable CPD annually. He supplements this with non-verifiable learning during the year, including reading his employer's internal technical updates.
