Would you like to meet fellow charity trustees over breakfast and update your knowledge with 2.5 hours of verifiable CPD, all free of charge? Then join our London-based event for charity trustees!
We are proud that so many ICAEW members generously support good causes as volunteers, including as ‘finance trustees’ or treasurers. If you are a charity trustee, treasurer or interested in the trustee role, you are invited to join our Big Trustee Breakfast. We will help you navigate change and financial difficulties, share practical advice on how to improve your Trustees’ Annual Report and consider how to be an effective trustee beyond your finance skills.
The event takes place on Wednesday 13 March at Chartered Accountants’ Hall (Moorgate, London) and is free for members and non-members. Places are limited, so early registration is recommended.
After an opening address from our Chief Executive, Michael Izza, and ICAEW’s Deputy President, Malcolm Bacchus, we will examine how your financial knowledge is best placed to support your charity, looking at:
- Why understanding your charity’s business model is so important for financial sustainability
- Trends and developments in effective charity reporting from PwC’s Building Public Trust Awards
- The role of finance trustees and treasurers in navigating an uncertain and changing financial landscape
- Charity board effectiveness – what this really means and how to overcome common obstacles
Online trustee training
We understand that not everyone is able to attend a London event, and we provide most of our training online. For those looking for an overview of the key trustee responsibilities, ICAEW has recently launched a free on-demand CPD course for charity trustees.
The hour-long training starts by outlining the fundamentals of being a charity trustee. Charity specialist Sally Knight describes the different types of charitable organisation and how they are regulated. She then outlines the six main duties of a charity trustee, which includes effective decision-making, managing resources responsibly, maintaining accountability and risk management.
The second part of the course covers current and upcoming developments that might impact charity trustees. Knight offers insights into UK GAAP for charities; the implementation of the Charities Act 2022; the Fundraising Regulator; and guidance from the Charity Commission.
If you are a charity trustee and an ICAEW member, the course offers you an easy, cost-free way to meet ICAEW’s CPD requirement of completing charity-related training each CPD year, but it is relevant for all charity trustees.
If you are looking to expand your understanding of the role and responsibilities of charity trustees, I’d encourage you to also complete our free Trustee Training Modules (e-learning). We updated the training on 1 November 2023 to introduce more interactivity and quizzes. On completion of the training, you will gain a certificate if you complete the final assessment successfully.
The Charity Community will continue to provide regular CPD-eligible webinars and events. Most of these are free to ICAEW members and Community subscribers, and you can also access recordings of previous online events in our ‘webinar library’.
