What's really killing Britain's historic pubs
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) reports that the number of pubs has dropped by a quarter since 2000, from 60,800 to 45,800 in 2022. Their figures show pubs have been hit by the energy crisis, with the average bill rising to £18,400 a year. Energy costs can be particularly high in historic pubs with traditional features like single-glazed windows. Research suggests that pubs have fallen in popularity compared to other possible leisure activities for consumers, with the gym, streaming videos and cafe visits currently more popular.

UK aims to build prototype fusion plant for near-limitless power
The British government plans to build a prototype nuclear fusion plant by 2040 on a former coal site in Nottinghamshire. A breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology came in December 2022 when the US Department of Energy said scientists in California had managed to generate more energy from a fusion reaction than they needed to trigger it.
