Branching out

Accountancy firms have an opportunity to include probate services within a more rounded offering to private clients and their families. ICAEW’s Peter James explains.

Many accountants have been providing estate administration services to their clients for years but until recently probate services, which sit well alongside tax, personal financial planning and wealth management services, have been the preserve of the legal profession.

After a two-year wait, the final parliamentary step was taken last August to approve the designation of ICAEW as an approved regulator and licensing authority for probate, thus opening up a new chapter for the provision of legal services in England and Wales.
