Cloud computing

Get a framework through which to establish the over-arching principles of software procurement relevant to many organisations, as well as how to identify and manage the commercial, legal and data risks specific to adopting a cloud-based strategy for a business.

Introduction

Software is central to the operations of most businesses. Historically desktop or ‘on premise’-based products were the norm, but cloud computing – IT resources provided over the internet - has now become a critical area of IT infrastructure. It is estimated that around 96% of organisations throughout the world are using cloud services to some extent.

Adopting cloud-based software is, in essence, a commitment to outsourcing. And as AI gains increasing traction in organisations of all shapes and sizes, the decisions needed in the selection of software, and where that software sits, become ever more important.

When selecting software, it is best to start not with the stark and over-simplified choice of ‘cloud’ or ‘on-premise’ software, but instead consider the features that define how to obtain and use software in a more nuanced way, which may then inform other decisions. This guidance is designed to highlight some of the strategic and cloud-specific considerations when adopting new software solutions.
