Following on from the recent webinar on Power Query: 10 everyday problems that Power Query solves best, the feedback report contained several suggestions for future events. The Excel Community will certainly be looking at these suggestions to inform its plans for future content and for the webinar programme. In the meantime, it's worth detailing some of the existing resources that are available.
Note that some of these webinars and articles are a few years old now and the areas covered have been subject to frequent change since then, so some features might have changed, or new features might have been added in the intervening time.
Other Power tools
Power Pivot and Power BI were mentioned several times in the feedback. Some previous webinars looked at these features:
Power Pivot
Power BI
- Power BI presentation features
- Power BI Desktop - turn data into action
- Transforming modelling and visualising data using Power BI
In addition, we have recently been running a series using the creation of a 'portal' to Excel Community and IT Faculty content as an example of the use of Power BI. Central to the portal is the ability to display lists of posts in the various different series of posts that we have included. The Power BI portal project can be found by selecting the 'Archive project' series:
The 'Open in full-screen mode' icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the embedded report should show the contents at a more readable size with the Escape key returning you to the post.
PivotTable guide
There are several webinars available that cover the use of PivotTables. Here are a couple of examples:
There are also many posts on PivotTables including a set of six articles in our recent 'Accountants' Guide' series:
Consolidation of data from existing workbooks using power query
Several posts have looked at different methods of achieving this, including:
Automate reporting using Power Query
Four years ago, the Excel Community carried a series of posts covering several aspects of this issue entitled 'Experimental Excel':
- Part 1 – introducing Power Query
- Part 2 – consolidating data from multiple files
- Part 3 – merging tables instead of using a lookup function
- Part 4 – formatting a Power Query table
- Part 5 – mission accomplished or mission impossible?
A follow-up webinar went through the process live:
Other practical applications of Power Query
In recent years, we have included multiple individual posts on different uses of Power Query but also several series. Once again these can easily be accessed using the Power BI portal mentioned above. The 'Christmas specials' series in 2019 featured 15 different Power Query solutions:
The 'Six impossible things' series looked at some more complex uses of Power Query.
For the individual posts, you can use the Keyword search Word Cloud in the archive portal to list articles for Power_Query, PivotTables or Power_BI.
