A fond farewell from Simon Hurst

As the Tech Faculty changes how its services are provided to members, this will be Simon Hurst’s final Excel column, after contributing to Chartech for more than 15 years.

And now what next? It was suggested that, as well as contributing a self-indulgent ramble through the history of the Tech Faculty and spreadsheets, I should also address the future of spreadsheets within the accountancy profession. Despite years of predictions that their demise was just around the corner, they seem to be as popular as ever. Regrettably, and notwithstanding the best efforts of the Tech Faculty and ICAEW in general, catastrophic spreadsheet errors also appear remarkably persistent. ICAEW has worked with the Tech Faculty and Excel Community to launch three major projects aimed, in part at least, at helping people create more reliable and robust spreadsheets:
